عزيزى القـارئ :
أقول إنهن تشابهن فى ضعف صحتهن ، وقصر أعمارهن ، بل وفى إصابتهن بنفس المرض الذى قضى على ثلاثتهن بالتعاقب ـ وهو مرض السـل أو التـدرن الرئـوى ـ فماتت به ( شارلوت ) فى سن التاسعة والثلاثين ، وماتـت به ( إميلى ) فى سـن الثلاثين .. ثم ماتت به ( آن ) فى سن التاسعة والعشرين !
والواقع أن فواجع أسرة ( برونتى ) لا تقف عند هذا الحد ، ولعل هذه الفواجع هى المسئولة عن الجو ا عزيزى القـارئ :

والواقع أن فواجع أسرة ( برونتى ) لا تقف عند هذا الحد ، ولعل هذه الفواجع هى المسئولة عن الجو القاتم الذى تتسم به رواياتهم جميعًا ، فقد كانت أسرة ( برونتى ) تتألف فى الأصل من ثمانية أفراد : الأب ، وهو قسيس كنيسة بجهة ( هاروث ) بإنجلترا .. وزوجته ، ثم أطفالهما السـتة ، وكانوا خمس بنات وولد ، هم بالترتيب : ماريا ، وإليزابيث ، وشالوت ، وبرانويل ، ( وهو الابن الذكر ) ، ثم إميلى ، وأخبرًا ( آن ) .
