در راهنمای وداع نیز همچون بسیاری آثار پیشین نویسنده ، حوادث در بالتیمور ، زادگاه نویسنده ، روی می دهند و بار دیگر روابط اعضای خانواده دستمایه کار قرار می گیرند . موضوع داغ عزیز و چگونگی گذر از مرحله سوگواری درونمایه ای است که آن تایلر پیش تر در آثاری همچون درخت قوطی حلبی و میبی مقدس به آن پرداخته بود
