وانقضى عام 1918 مُندفعاً كالزّوبعة الوحشيّة فوق روسيا. وكان الماء داكناً في سُحب الخريف الجهِمة. وكانت الجبهة في كلّ مكان؛ في الشّمال الأقصى، وفي الفولغا قرب قازان وفي حوض الفولغا الأسفل قرب نسارتسين، وفي شمال القفقاس، وعلى حُدود المناطق الـمُحتلّة من قِبل ألمانيا. ولآلاف الفراسخ كانت الخنادق تمتدّ وتمتدّ. ولم يُدخل الخريف الزاحف الفرحة على قُلوب المقاتلين، وكثيرون فكّروا، وانقضى عام 1918 مُندفعاً كالزّوبعة الوحشيّة فوق روسيا. وكان الماء داكناً في سُحب الخريف الجهِمة. وكانت الجبهة في كلّ مكان؛ في الشّمال الأقصى، وفي الفولغا قرب قازان وفي حوض الفولغا الأسفل قرب نسارتسين، وفي شمال القفقاس، وعلى حُدود المناطق الـمُحتلّة من قِبل ألمانيا. ولآلاف الفراسخ كانت الخنادق تمتدّ وتمتدّ. ولم يُدخل الخريف الزاحف الفرحة على قُلوب المقاتلين، وكثيرون فكّروا، وهم ينظرون إلى السُّحب الآتية من الشمال، بقراهم، حيث كانت الريح تقلع القشّ من السطوح، والقرّاص ينمو في الأفنية، وتتعفّن البطاطس في حدائق الخضروات. وما من نهايةٍ تُرى للحرب. والـمُستقبل حافلٌ بالليالي الدامسة وعودُ الإضاءة القديم يُضيء البيوت التي ينتظر أهلها عودة الآباء والأبناء وما من عودة، ويسمعون رواياتٍ عن أمور رهيبة تجعل الأطفال يبكون وهم على الرّفوف فوق المواقد.
