في عام 1938؛ وضع طه حسين كتابه الشهير “مستقبل الثقافة في مصر” موضحاً في مقدمته أن قرار التأليف جاء بناء على رغبته في وضع الخطوط العامة لثقافة مصر في مرحلة حرجة من تاريخ مصر الحديث، تلك التي ابتدأت مع جلاء الاحتلال البريطاني وتوقيع معاهدة الاستقلال، فكانت مرحلة مخاض للكثير من التنبؤات المتفاوتة بين القلق والتفاؤل بمستقبل مصر.

لذا حظي هذا الكتاب بالكثير من الاهتمام خصوصاً وأن مؤلفه هو طه حسين، ذاك الكاتب الثائر الذي عُين للتو عميداً لكلية الآداب، الأمر الذي يبرر تلك الأهمية التاريخية التي ما زال يحظى بها كتابه حتى اليوم. وبعد مرور أكثر من أربعة عقود على وفاته؛ ما زالت أفكار ومواقف الدكتور طه حسين تثير الجدل حتى اليوم، مما دفع أحد الباحثين إلى عنونة كتابه باسم: (طه حسين مطلوب حياً أو ميتاً)! لذا قد لا تكون إعادة دراسة هذا الكتاب تحليلاً ونقداً بالأمر السهل، إذ توجب علي الاهتمام بالظروف الثقافية والسياسية التي عاشها طه حسين إبان وضعه لهذا الكتاب الذي تنبع أهمية إعادة قراءته اليوم من تجدد الهجوم على مناهج التعليم في العالم الإسلامي.
