شاروبيم فى أنهاء العمل على هذه الصورة المفاجئة، اللهم إلا إذا قد انتوى استكماله فى مجلد رابه، وهذا نا لا نستطيع القطع به لسنوات قليلة خلت كان الاعتقاد السائد لدى المشاغلين بتاريخ مصر الحديث هو أن "ميخائيل شاروبيم" صاحب (الكافى فى تاريخ مصر القديم والحديث) لم يكتب سوى أجزائه الأربعة المعروفة، وفى حقبة التسعيينيات من هذا القرن بدت أشارات إلى أحتمال وجود جزء خامس لم ينشر، واستعاد البعض ما ذكره (توفيق اسكاروس) فى (مقتطف) يونيو 1918 عن وجود جزء خامس كان قد أتمه قبل وفاته لكن الأحوال لم تسمح بأصداره - بل أن اسكاروس ذكر أن شاروبيم بدأ جزءاً سادساً ولكنه لم يتمه لإشتداد المرض عليه، وفى ترجمته لتوفيق اسكاروس ذكر زكى محمد مجاهد (الأعلام الشرقية فى المائة الرابعة عشر الهجرية) أن المترجم اتصل بالمؤرخ ميخائيل شاروبيم من أجل طبع الجزء الخامس من كتابه.
الكافى فى ثلاثة مجلدات ضخمة يبلغ عدد صفحاتها مجتمعة 1238 صفحة من الفولسكاب (19سم×29)، وهو منسوخ على الآله الكاتبه، واعتنى صاحبه بتجليده يوحى بأنه كان يعتزم حفظة وليس نشره، يتناول العمل الفترة الواقعية بين وفاة الخديوى توفيق فى يناير 1892 وومصرع بطرس باشا غاىل رئيس النظار فى فبراير 1910، ويتوقف ميخائيل شاروبيم عند هذا الشهر بصورة مبتورة - فقد كان يتحدث عن محاكمة (إبراهيم ناصف الوردانى) ويشرح إختلاف الأطباء والمحكمة حول حالته العقلية ومدى مسئوليته عما فعل، وموقف الصحف الفبطية منه، وهجومها عليه، وتكليف نظارة الداخلية لمحافظ العاصمة (بانذار) هذه الصحف بالكف عن هذا السلوك - وفجأة ينتهى العمل، ولا تعرف - حتى الآن - أسباب ميخائيل شاروبيم فى أنهاء العمل على هذه الصورة المفاجئة، اللهم إلا إذا كان فد انتوى استكماله فى مجلد رابع، وهذا ما لا نستطيع القطع به.
