De son vrai nom Abû al-Abbâs Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Mûsâ ibn Atâ' Allâh, celui que l'on connaît sous le nom de Ibn al-Arîf est né à Almeria, dans une famille originaire de Tanger. Au moment où naquit Ibn al-`Arîf, Almeria connaissait un rayonnement culturel et littéraire important. Elle était la capitale d'un de ces royaumes qu'on appelait les « tarifas », en Andalousie. A De son vrai nom Abû al-Abbâs Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Mûsâ ibn Atâ' Allâh, celui que l'on connaît sous le nom de Ibn al-Arîf est né à Almeria, dans une famille originaire de Tanger. Au moment où naquit Ibn al-`Arîf, Almeria connaissait un rayonnement culturel et littéraire important. Elle était la capitale d'un de ces royaumes qu'on appelait les « tarifas », en Andalousie. Almeria était un des centres du soufisme en Andalousie, en même temps que Cordoue et que Pechina, village des environs d'Almeria. Le jeune Ibn al-'Arif se forma à toutes les sciences traditionnelles, dans lesquelles il devint un savant réputé. Mais s'il a peu à peu joui, au fil des années, d'une renommée considérable, c'est en raison de sa sainteté et de ses vertus extraordinaires. Le grand maître andalous Ibn Arabî, né à Murcie quelques temps après la mort d'Ibn al-Arif, fera souvent référence aux enseignements de ce dernier dans ses écrits. Ibn al-Arîf fonda une tarîqa, une « voie », qui attira des disciples de plus en plus nombreux. La vie d'Ibn al-Arîf, toute de dévotion et de recueillement, se termina tragiquement. Probablement mort d'empoisonnement, il est enterré à Marrakech, aux côtés de son disciple Ibn Barrajân.
