تعد مادة الرياضيات ميداناً خصباً للتدريب على أساليب التفكير السليمة حيث يلاحظ أن من أهداف تدريس هذه المادة في دول العالم هو تنمية مهارات التفكير المختلفة فعلى مستوى الوطن العربي يهدف الرياضيات إلى تنمية القدرة على الكشف والإبتكار وتعويد الطالب على عملية التجريد والتعميم، وأن يكتشف الطالب إتجاهات عملية في تفكيره لمواجهة المشكلات وإختيار الحلول المناسبة لها، ومهارات التفكير في مجال الرياضيات كهدف تربوي يمكن تحقيقه عن طريق التدرب والممارسة، وتواصلت الدراسات إلى أن الطلبة المتفوقين في الرياضيات يمتلكون مستويات عالية في العمليات المعرفية ذات المستوى العالمي (تحليل، تركيب، تقويم).
وتعد مادة الرياضيات مادة مناسبة لتنمية هذه المستويات، وقد تم التمييز بين مستويات التفكير العليا والدنيا من خلال الملاحظة في الفصل الدراسي والمقابلة مع المعلمين والموجهين، ومن خلال هذه الخبرات تم التوصل إلى أن مهارات التفكير الدنيا (الأساسية) تتطلب التطبيق الآلي الروتيني للمعلومات المكتسبة سابقاً قبل إسترجاع المعلومات المخزونة في الذاكرة، والإهتمام بالأرقام في القوانين المتعلمة سابقاً، وعلى العكس فإن مهارات التفكير العليا تتطلب حث التلاميذ على الإستنتاج وتحليل المعلومات.
وقد تم تقديم هذا الكتاب في جزئين جاء الجزء الأول في خمسة فصول على النحو التالي: المتفوقون، الأنشطة الإثرائية في الرياضيات، مستويات التفكير العليا، الإتجاه.
أما الجزء الثاني اشتمل على بعض الأنشطة الإثرائية في وحدة المنطق الرياضي والعمليات الثنائية.
