يعد العصر العباسي ذروة العصور العربية السالفة حضارة وثقافة، ففيه أصبحت المدينة لا البادية مركز الثقل، وأخذت الرابطة القبلية تخلي مكانها للروابط الفكرية والذهبية، وتغلب الجو المنفتح على ثقافات الغير على الجو العربي الصافي. وكان لا بد لهذا التبدل في المناخ الاجتماعي أن تظهر آثاره في النتاج الثقافي، ورياح التغيير التي عصفت بكثير من مواضعات الحياة الاجتماعية كان لا بد أن يكون لها صدى في القصيدة العربية ذات الجذور المتغلغلة في أعماق الوجدان العربي فظهرت بعض تداعيات التجديد في المضمون وفي الشكل، وعلى الرغم من أن هذه التداعيات جوبهت بمعارضة شديدة ولكنها استطاعت أن تمد لها بعض الجذور في التربة العربية.
وقد حاول الدكتور محمد زكي العشماوي من خلال بحث جاد ومتعمق أن يضيء هذا النزوع إلى ارتياد آفاق جديدة في القول الشعري لدى ثلاثة من أعلام الشعر في هذا العصر وهم: بشار بن برد وأبو نواس والمتنبي حيث اتخذ التغيير لدى كل شاعر من هؤلاء سمات خاصة به.
وهذا المؤلف الذي نقدمه للقراء يثري البحوث النقدية التي تناولت الشعر في العصر العباسي من مختلف جوانبه، ويحق لكل مهتم بالشعر في هذا العصر أن يقدر جدية الدكتور العشماوي في بحثه وسعيه المخلص إلى أن يزيد مساحات هامة على ما أنجزه النقاد من قبله.
