لم تنل الحرب العالمية الأولى نصيبها المفترض من الدرس والبحث، وظل جل الاهتمام فى الكتابات التى تناولت الحروب الأوربية باللغة العربية منصبا على الحرب العالمية الثانية وتأريخها إلا أن الاثنين فى الحقيقة كل لا ينفصل؛ فلولا الأولى لما كان هناك هتلر فى ألمانيا، ولما كانت هناك حرب ثانية، ولابد لدراسة الثانية من بحث الأولى، وترجع أهمية الحرب العالمية الأولى إلى أنها مرحلة فاصلة بي لم تنل الحرب العالمية الأولى نصيبها المفترض من الدرس والبحث، وظل جل الاهتمام فى الكتابات التى تناولت الحروب الأوربية باللغة العربية منصبا على الحرب العالمية الثانية وتأريخها إلا أن الاثنين فى الحقيقة كل لا ينفصل؛ فلولا الأولى لما كان هناك هتلر فى ألمانيا، ولما كانت هناك حرب ثانية، ولابد لدراسة الثانية من بحث الأولى، وترجع أهمية الحرب العالمية الأولى إلى أنها مرحلة فاصلة بين عصرين عصر السيف والجياد، والقلعة وتراص الجنود فى الميدان والهجوم على المواجهة، وعصر الطائرة والغواصة، والدبابة.
كما حدت الحرب العالمية الأولى بمعاركها المختلفة ولاسيما معركة السوم وكامبرى بالمفكرين العسكريين الأوربيين إلى ابتداع نظريات عسكرية جديدة أدت إلى إحداث ثورة فى مجال التسليح وفى الفكر عموماً، الأمر الذى حدد شكل الصراعات المسلحة بين الدول فى المستقبل.
وهذا الكتاب ليس من أهدافه بحث تاريخ الحرب بشكل مفصل بل يتعرض لها كلما دعت الضرورة إلى ذلك، فهدف هذا الكتاب الأساسى هو عرض أهم معارك الحرب.
