الثورة العرابية، كأية ثورة، وراءها مؤثرات فكرية وأصول وتيارات عديدة تعود قيمتها جميعاً ليس فقط لما تمثله في الوجدان المصري من توهج حيوي خلاق يمتد أثره حتى الوقت الراهن، بل لأنها أيضاً ثورة قومية تشتعل ضد الطغيان الداخلي، والخطر الخارجي. بيد أن هذا، في جانب كبير منه، يرتبط بالدافع الآخر الذي حفز "مصطفى عبد الغني" على كتابه هذه الدراسة، فإن موضوعات التاريخ السياسي تمثل جانباً ضخماً من اهتمامات المؤرخين المصريين بوجه عام، في وقت لم تستأثر فيه الحركة الفكرية ببعض هذا الاهتمام.
وأياً كانت الأسباب التي تتصل بتبرير ذلك الواقع، فإن النتائج المترتبة عليه تصبح وخيمة العواقب، إذا علمنا أن المؤثرات الفكرية تمثل في أية أمة (العقل) الذي تقاس به درجات الوعي والإدراك. وقد قسمت هذه الدراسة إلى أربعة فصول رئيسية، خصص الأول منها لدراسة الأصول الفكرية الأولى التي كانت بمثابة التكوينات الجينية لحركة الفكر المصري في العصر الحديث، ومن خلال المنظور التاريخي للأحداث، وعرض ثانيها للزعامات الفكرية التي لعبت دوراً خطيراً في حركة النهضة.
أما الفصل الثالث فخصص لمؤثرات عصر إسماعيل، التي ولدت انفجاراً عبر عن نفسه في يقظة فكرية شاملة، كان أهم مظاهرها تكوين رأي عام ظهر في الصحافة الوطنية، منذ 1878، ثم في انبثاقات نيابية مثلت الوعي الفكري في تلك الفترة. وأخيراً قدم الفصل الرابع، دراسة لمشاهد الصراع بين القوى الوطنية والقوى الاستعمارية، راسماً الخط البياني للتطور الفكري وتصاعده، وقد تحددت خطوطه الرئيسية بين مظاهر الضباط في 1889، و حركة قصر النيل، و تحوله إلى ثورة في عابدين، تم بلوغه درجة النضج الكامل في تحالف وطني لموجهة الخطر الأجنبي الذي تمثل في المذكرة الثنائية في 25 يناير سنة 1882.
