مؤلف الكتاب هو أحد أكثر الشخصيات أهمية فى التاريخ الثقافى والفكرى فى الحضارة الإنسانية. لم يُعرف تاريخ مولده أو وفاته بشكل قاطع, عاش وألف كتابه فى عصر "الدول المتحاربة" 475-221 ق.م.

كانت تجربة سونبين كقائد عسكرى خاض المعارك, جزءا من الأفكار التى تبلورت فى صياغاته النظرية. وقد ظل الكتاب مفقودا طيلة ما يقرب من ألفى عام حتى تم اكتشافه سنة 1972 ونشر لأول مرة فى عام 1975 حيث حرصت معظم دور النشر على تحقيق الجزء الأول منه دون الثانى. لكنا نقدم للقارىء العربى فى هذه النسخة الترجمة الكاملة للجزئين كليهما
