هل الموظف الذي يحصل على راتب يصل إلى ٢٥٠٠٠٠ دولار في السنة الواحدة أذكى، أو أفضل، أو أكثر كفاءة عشر مرات من الشخص الذي يحصل على ٢٥٠٠٠ دولار في المدة نفسها؟ بالطبع لا! ففي واحدة من الدراسات البحثية التي أجريت، أُعطي ١٠٠٠ شخص بالغ اختبارًا موحدًا لقياس نسبة الذكاء، فكان الشخص الأكثر ذكاءً في المجموعة أذكى مرتين ونصف المرة فقط من أقل الأشخاص ذكاءً في المجموعة نفسها. أما عن فارق الدخل بين أفراد المجموعة فكان هائلًا! فقد كان الشخص ذو الدخل الأعلى في المجموعة يحصل على راتب أكبر ١٠٠ مرة من الشخص ذي الدخل الأقل في المجموعة نفسها.
وها هي ذي نقطة أخرى مهمة؛ فلم يكن الشخص ذو الدخل الأعلى في المجموعة هو الأذكى في المجموعة فيما يتعلق باختبار نسبة الذكاء، كما لم يكن الشخص ذو الراتب الأقل هو الأقل ذكاءً في المجموعة. فإلى حد ما، يلعب الذكاء، أو الموهبة الفطرية، دورًا في نجاح الفرد من عدمه، لكن في المرتبة التالية، يتعلق النجاح بالسمات الشخصية، والكد، والتعلم المستمر، والإدارة المثلى للوقت.
