تبدو أسماك الأنقليس أنها الشكل الأكثر دنيوية للأسماك، لكنها على الرغم من ذلك تتمتع بدورة حياة تعد الأكثر تميزاً عن الحيوانات الأخرى كافة. فوفقاً لآخر المعلومات التي يوفرها لنا العلم، فإن الأنقليس الذي يوجد اليوم في مياه أوروبا وأمريكا العذبة، قد ولد في الأعماق السحيقة من بحر سارغاسو في المحيط الأطلسي، وقطع رحلة تمتد مئات الأميال، بل والألوف منها، ليصل إلى هذه المياه العذبة تبدو أسماك الأنقليس أنها الشكل الأكثر دنيوية للأسماك، لكنها على الرغم من ذلك تتمتع بدورة حياة تعد الأكثر تميزاً عن الحيوانات الأخرى كافة. فوفقاً لآخر المعلومات التي يوفرها لنا العلم، فإن الأنقليس الذي يوجد اليوم في مياه أوروبا وأمريكا العذبة، قد ولد في الأعماق السحيقة من بحر سارغاسو في المحيط الأطلسي، وقطع رحلة تمتد مئات الأميال، بل والألوف منها، ليصل إلى هذه المياه العذبة، ويقضي فيها ما يقارب العقد من الزمن، ويعود من بعدها إلى المحيط ليتزاوج ويموت هناك.
ولطالما عد الأنقليس طعاماً مفضلاً للبشر، منذ العصور القديمة حتى العصور الوسطى، وحالياً يقدر استهلاك الأنقليس في اليابان وحدها بما يفوق المليار دولار سنوياً.
يقوم ريتشارد شفيد في كتابه هذا بالتطرق إلى نواح عدة متعلقة بالأنقليس ، متعرضاً لتاريخه الطبيعي مروراً بقيمته السوقية السابقة والحالية، شارحاً المعاني التي مثلها في الأدب والفنون، وطارحاً المخاطر الحالية التي تهدد وجوده. وبالنسبة للكثيرين، يعد الأنقليس من الحيوانات التي تسير في طريقها إلى الانقراض، وعلى الرغم من المحاولات المتكررة لتربيته في مزارع والمبالغ والجهود الضخمة التي بذلت في سبيل تحقيق ذلك، فإن هذه المحاولات باءت بالفشل كنتيجة لرفض الأنقليس الحياة في الأسر، وحاجته إلى مساحة واسعة، كالتي يؤمنها له المحيط، لإتمام دورته في طريقه إلى النضج.
