إن هذا الكتاب، الذى أعده وائل فكرى ونفذه د. محمد فتحى، عبارة عن إيجاز واختصار فى مجلدين لمجموعة العمل الشامل الذى أعده العلّامة الدكتور سليم حسن عن حضارتنا: "موسوعة مصر القديمة" فى 16 مجلدًا.
فالدكتور سليم حسن من أوائل العلماء الذين أسسوا علم الأثار فى اللغة العربية، والثانى من ثلاثة علماء مصريين أفذاذ فى هذا المجال، وهم أحمد كمال باشا وسليم حسن ثم سامى جبرة.

لقد كتب الد. سليم حسن موسوعة (مصر القديمة) فى 16 جزءًا من الحجم الكبير تجاوز عدد صفحاتها الأحد عشر ألف صفحة، وقد كتب مقدمة الجزء الأول فى أغسطس من عام 1940 وبدأت الموسوعة من عصور مل قبل التاريخ وحتى انتهى الجزء السادس عشر بنهاية عهد بطليموس السابع، ولم يسعفه القدر فى استكمال عصر البطالمة، لذا وجب النتويه بأن العمل الذى بين أيدينا قد قام على اختصار الموسوعة وحتى الجزء الثالث عشر عند فتح الإسكندر الأكبر لمصر، أما العصر البطلمى فيكون بذلك مبتورًا بالموسوعة، لذا تم وضع ملحق للعصرين البطلمى والرومانى اعتمادا على مصادر أخرى.
