هذا الكتاب هو أطروحة لنيل دكتوراه دولة ناقشها جون غانياج سنة 1957 بجامعة السربون حول تونس قبيل فرض الحماية الفرنسية تحت إشراف المؤرخ الفرنسي أندري جوليان.
و تزامن إعداد الأطروحة في خمسينات القرن الماضي مع فترة حرجة من تاريخ العالم ألا و هي تصفية الاستعمار في إفريقيا و آسيا. فقد نشأ في أوساط المؤرخين الأوروبيين اتجاه يرى أن الاستعمار لم يكن مفروضا على المستعمرات القديمة و إن هذا الكتاب هو أطروحة لنيل دكتوراه دولة ناقشها جون غانياج سنة 1957 بجامعة السربون حول تونس قبيل فرض الحماية الفرنسية تحت إشراف المؤرخ الفرنسي أندري جوليان.

حسب الكاتب، إن تاريخ الثلاث سنوات 1878-1881 هو تاريخالتردد الفرنسي و حيرة الحكومات الثلاث المتعاقبة ، تجاه ردود الفعل المفترضة للرأي العام، و تجاه استياء إيطاليا. و في الخفاء ، بدأت المجموعات المالية غزوها للإيالة التونسية بعد تأخر اهتمامها بها. و كان قرار أفريل 1881 المنتزع بعد جهد من حكومة فيري قد قادإلى احتلال سريع للبلاد حيث آل إلى حماية ترضي رجال الأعمال و الديبلوماسيين ، لكنها أثارت في الصحافة كما في البرلمان اتهامات بالفساد و حددت طريقة معارضة الاستعمار و ابتكرت تقليدا معاديا له.
