يزخر التراث العربي بعدد وافر من الكتب والمجلدات التي تشكل جزءاً هاماً من بنية التراث العالمي، كما أن الدراسات اللغوية قد أصبحت عالماً له قواعده ومنهاجه وفلسفته وأهدافه. كما أصبحت هذه الدراسات مفتوحاً لأسرار العالم القديم ودراسة إنسانه.
ومن هنا فقد حظيت المنطقة العربية بنصيب وافر من هذه الدراسات كان نصيب اليمن منها أقل ما يمكن ومرد ذلك لأسباب عديدة يذكرها الباحث مطهر علي الإ يزخر التراث العربي بعدد وافر من الكتب والمجلدات التي تشكل جزءاً هاماً من بنية التراث العالمي، كما أن الدراسات اللغوية قد أصبحت عالماً له قواعده ومنهاجه وفلسفته وأهدافه. كما أصبحت هذه الدراسات مفتوحاً لأسرار العالم القديم ودراسة إنسانه.
ومن هنا فقد حظيت المنطقة العربية بنصيب وافر من هذه الدراسات كان نصيب اليمن منها أقل ما يمكن ومرد ذلك لأسباب عديدة يذكرها الباحث مطهر علي الإرباني في مقدمته، والمعجم اليمني إضافة لكونه مساهمة أصيلة في عملية إعادة النظر بالتراث اليميني الفني وإعادة ربطه بالتراث العربي. ولذا فإن هذا المعجم يعد مرجعاً لا غنى عنه. وقد أورد المؤلف تسلسل الكلمات بحسب أوائل حروفها وبحسب الترتيب العربي لحروف الهجاء.
ولما كان هذا المعجم يهدف إلى إثبات ما في اللهجة اليمنية من أصالة وعراقة عن طريق ما تحويه من مفردات لم توردها القواميس ولا اهتم بها اللغويون لسبب ما. فإنه لم يعتن بالمفردات العربية القاموسية التي ترد على ألسنة الناس في اليمن. كما يبرز هذا المعجم الدلالات الخاصة لبعض المفردات العربية في اللهجة اليمنية وهي دلالات لا توجد في القواميس ولها خصوصية دلالة لا خصوصية صيغة. وقد تم تدوين المفردات في هذا المعجم على أساس جذورها الثلاثي المجرد من الزيادات.
