لم يكن تناول سيبويه للقرائن النحوية بمعزل عن نظرية العمل النحوي، بل هي عنده وسائل فهم وآليات تفسير مرافقة للعامل النحوي، فالقرائن تكشف عن الصيغة والرتبة، وتحدد المفردة من جهتي التنكير والتعريف، وتبيّن الربط، ونوع العلامة الإعرابية التي تستحقها المفردة بحسب موقعها في التركيب، فضلاً عن العلاقات الإسنادية وغيرها.
واستناداً إلى هذا الفهم يضع الدكتور لطيف حاتم الزاملي دراسته عن (القرائن وأثرها في التوجيه النحوي عند سيبويه) مستنداً إلى كتاب سيبويه على بابين يسبقهما مقدمة ألقت الضوء على القرائن: معناها، وأنواعها، وأثرها في التوجيه النحوي، ثم الوسائل والآليات التي اعتمدها سيبويه في منهجه في التوجيه النحوي، وخصص الباب الأول في الدراسة للقرائن المعنوية، وهو على فصلين: الأول منهما لقرينة الإسناد، عرض فيه الكاتب لمعنى الإسناد ومفهومه عند سيبويه، ودرس الإسناد بحسب أصنافه: في الفعل، وفي الإسم، وفي النواسخ، وذلك باعتبار أن الإسناد هو المنطلق نحو كل التوجيهات النحوية، ونحو النماذج الأخرى للجملة، فهي جميعها متفرعة من قرنية الإسناد. وأما الفصل الثاني، فكان لقرينة التخصيص، وهي قرنية كبرى ينضوي تحتها طائفة من القرائن النحوية المعنوية، ومن خلالها درس الكاتب المنصوبات، وعلاقتها بقرينة الإسناد.
ويأتي الفصل الباب الثاني للقرائن اللفظية "السياقية" ، والحالية "المقامية"، وهو على فصلين أيضاً: أحدهما – لأثر القرائن اللفظية في التوجيه النحوي عند سيبويه، عرض فيه الكاتب لأهم القرائن اللفظية التي تمدّ الكلام بكل مقومات البناء الدلالة، والآخر – للقرائن الحالية، وفيه يبيّن أثر الملابسات الخارجية، ومقام الكلام وظروفه والحال المشاهدة في توجيه التركيب، والأساليب النحوية، وما يحصل للجملة من تغيرات طارئة تؤثر في شكل الكلام ومعناه. وأخيراً خاتمة وخلاصات.
