البوذيّ، في الأصل، حركة رهبانيّة نشأت داخل التقاليد البراهمانيّة، عندما قام بوذا بإنكار المبادئ الأساسيّة في الفلسفة الهندوسيّة، ورفض وصاية السلطة الكهنوتيّة، كما لم يعترف بأهليّة كتابات الفيدا ولا بالآلهة والطقوس الّتي كانت تقوم عليها. التعاليم الجديدة، الّتي بشّر بها بوذا، كانت موجّهة للرجال والنساء من كلّ الطبقات التعاليم الجديدة، الّتي بشّر بها بوذا، كانت موجّهة للرجال البوذيّ، في الأصل، حركة رهبانيّة نشأت داخل التقاليد البراهمانيّة، عندما قام بوذا بإنكار المبادئ الأساسيّة في الفلسفة الهندوسيّة، ورفض وصاية السلطة الكهنوتيّة، كما لم يعترف بأهليّة كتابات الفيدا ولا بالآلهة والطقوس الّتي كانت تقوم عليها. التعاليم الجديدة، الّتي بشّر بها بوذا، كانت موجّهة للرجال والنساء من كلّ الطبقات التعاليم الجديدة، الّتي بشّر بها بوذا، كانت موجّهة للرجال والنساء من كلّ الطبقات الإجتماعية بلا إستثناء، حيث كان يرفض القول بأنّ القيمة الروحيّة للإنسان تتحدّد عند ولادته (وفق ما كان سائداً في النظام الطبقيّ الهندوسيّ). وتتعيّن البوذيّة اليوم بصورتين: العقيدة الأصلية المسمّاة (ثيرافادا) أو (هينايانا) أي (العربة الصغيرة)؛ والــ (ماهايانا)، أي (العربة الكبيرة). انتشرت البوذيّة في بلدان عديدة، كالهند، وسريلانكا، وتايلاند، وكمبوديا، وبورما، ولاوس؛ ويسود مذهب (ثيرافادا) في هذه الدول، فيما انتشر مذهب (ماهايانا) في الصين، واليابان، وتايوان، والتبت، والنيبال، ومنغوليا، وكوريا، وفيتنام، وبعض أجزاء من الهند، وفي العالم اليوم ما يقرب من 300 مليون شخص من معتنقي هذه الديانة.
