حل مؤلف هذا الكتاب في الأرض المقدسة، في أواسط العام الماضي، كمراسل لصحيفتين أوروبيتين. وخلال إقامته في القدس، كان شاهد عيان على مأساة مثيرة؛ وبما أن فصول هذا الحدث المأساوي ليس من اختصاص الصحافة لأنها تخضع، كما في أي بلد محتل عسكريا، إلى رقابة تعسفية وصارمة، فقد ذهب الراوي إلى تضمينها في رسائله العائلية، وإن إعادة كتابة تلك الرسائل يشكل هذا الكتاب، فهو يقدّم للقارئ سردا مب حل مؤلف هذا الكتاب في الأرض المقدسة، في أواسط العام الماضي، كمراسل لصحيفتين أوروبيتين. وخلال إقامته في القدس، كان شاهد عيان على مأساة مثيرة؛ وبما أن فصول هذا الحدث المأساوي ليس من اختصاص الصحافة لأنها تخضع، كما في أي بلد محتل عسكريا، إلى رقابة تعسفية وصارمة، فقد ذهب الراوي إلى تضمينها في رسائله العائلية، وإن إعادة كتابة تلك الرسائل يشكل هذا الكتاب، فهو يقدّم للقارئ سردا مبسطا ومألوفا، يخلو من أي تكلّف أو طموح أدبي
تدور الرواية حول أسرة رجل من الجليل اسمه ابراهيم برهومة، وله ابنتان سلمى ونهلة (غصن الزيتون)، وولد في سلك الكهنوت يحمل اسما كهنوتيا، ولا يتسمى باسم العائلة. وسلمى هي عقدة الرواية لأنها اتهمت بعلاقات غير مشروعة مع الضباط الأتراك ثم الإنجليز، مما لطخ شرف العائلة وأودى بعقل والدها المسكين، في الوقت الذي فرت فيه إلى مصر مع عشيقها الضابط الانجليزي، أما شقيقتها نهلة فشخصية غامضة، وهي الشخصية التي تحمل الرواية اسمها، بدأت عشيقة للحاكم التركي، ثم تحولت بعد سقوط الاتراك ومجىء الانجليز إلى زوجة لشاب مقدس مسيحي (نوري دانييل)، وهو من عائلة موسرة، ويحمل درجة الدكتوراة في الحقوق من باريس، ونوري هو البطل الحقيقي للرواية، والذي التحق بالثوار وقادهم ضد الصهاينة وحماتهم من سلطة الانتداب البريطاني، ونوري هو الضحية الذي يدفع حياته ثمنا لموقفه الوطني، والذي تنتهي الرواية بشنقه من قبل الانجليز.
