كلما جاء ذكر التصوف والصوفية تبادرت إلى الذهن الصورة النمطية لـ "الدرويش" بأسماله البالية، بينما يقصر أهل الاختصاص تناولهم للموضوع عادة على المجالات الفكرية والفلسفية لكبار قدامى المتصوفة، وبين هذا وذاك تُغفل خلاصة تعاليم التصوف الحق، التي تصب جل اهتمامها في خدمة الإنسانية بغض النظر عن العقيدة أو اللون أو الطائفة، فالمتصوفة الأُول عدّوا الخلق جميعاً "عيال الله" من دون تميي كلما جاء ذكر التصوف والصوفية تبادرت إلى الذهن الصورة النمطية لـ "الدرويش" بأسماله البالية، بينما يقصر أهل الاختصاص تناولهم للموضوع عادة على المجالات الفكرية والفلسفية لكبار قدامى المتصوفة، وبين هذا وذاك تُغفل خلاصة تعاليم التصوف الحق، التي تصب جل اهتمامها في خدمة الإنسانية بغض النظر عن العقيدة أو اللون أو الطائفة، فالمتصوفة الأُول عدّوا الخلق جميعاً "عيال الله" من دون تمييز بينهم سوى بالتقوى والاستقامة، تيمناً بالقول المأثور "الخلق عيال الله، وأحبهم إلى الله من أحسن إلى عياله"، ولا يكتمل الإيمان وحب الله من دون محبة خلقه، ولا تكمن العبادة الصادقة في رأيهم في تأدية الشعائر والنوافل فحسب، بل في خدمة الإنسانية، ومن دونها يصبح الابتهال والتضرع والاتشاح بالخرق مقيماً يفتقر إلى الجدوى.
يعرض هذا الكتاب نماذج لكبار الصوفية، الذين تركوا تراثاً إنسانياً معمقاً، لا يزال يلهم الباحثين برؤى جديدة في قسميه النظري والفلسفي، ويحسب لأصحاب هذه النماذج أولاًَ اهتمامهم بجوهر الإنسان، وإشاعتهم الحب والتسامح وتقبل الآخر، ودعوتهم للتحلي بأخلاق الله، انطلاقاً من عدّ كل الناس سواسية، وفقاً لمبدئهم
