الكتابة في موضوع العروض العربي ليست أمراً جديداً، فقد استهلك هذا الموضوع قديماً وحديثاً، الكثير من الجهود على المستوى الوطن العربي كله.
إلا أن هذه الجهود بقيت وحتى وقت قريب جداً تدور، وبكليتها تقريباً في إطار النظام الذي وضعه العالم العربي الكبير الخليل بن أحمد الفراهيدي لهذا العروض قبل مئات السنين، تردد بطريقة أو بأخرى ما جاء فيه من مصطلحات ومفهومات وتشرح ما انطوى عليه من قوانين وقواعد.
وكان من نتائج هذا الجهد الرائد والمتفتح أن ظهرت دراسات تتعلق بالعروض العربي يطمح بعض أصحابها إلى الخروج من عباءة نظام الخليل خروجاً تاماً، والبعض الآخر إلى تهذيب هذا النظام وتشذيبه بتخليصه من بعض قيوده ومفهوماته الغامضة والمعقدة، بالإضافة إلى تبني مفهومات مغايرة أكثر طواعية وتماسكاً مستمدة من علم اللسانيات على وجه الخصوص.
والدراسة التي بين أيدينا ليست في الحقيقة سوى محاولة متواضعة تعد إمتداداً جدلياً لتلك الدراسات التجديدية التي حرصت في آن واحد على التوفيق بين ثلاثة ميادين علمية هي العروض واللسانيات والإيقاع، وعلى إماطة اللثام أكثر فأكثر عن أصالة نظام الخليل بتخليصه ما علق به من مصطلحات وقواعد كانت وما زالت سبباً في تعقيده والنفور منه.
من جهة، وبالكشف عن العلاقة التي تربط بينه وبين اللسانيات العربية وعلم الإيقاع، من جهة أخرى.
