يعتبر هذا الكتاب محاولة لإلقاء الضوء على المسرح الإيراني منذ نشأته حتى اليوم، وإضاءة الطريق أمام القارئ العربي الذي يرغب بالتعرف على مسيرة هذا الفن في إيران.
يتطرق الكتاب في فصوله المختلفة إلى المسرح في إيران منذ ما قبل دخول الإسلام إلى هذا البلد وبعده، كذلك يتحدث عن المسرح بمعناه الحديث. كما يشمل النشاط المسرحي بعد الثورة الإسلامية في إيران سنة 1978 للميلاد، وأهم الكتاب المسرحيين منذ البداية حتى اليوم.
ما يبرز في هذا الكتاب هو أن التركيز الأساسي، -بخاصة في المسرح الحديث-هو على الأدب المسرحي بشكل عام، لكن ذلك لم يمنعنا من أن نشير أحياناً إلى أمور مسرحية أخرى كالعرض والإخراج وسائر متطلبات المسرح من جهة، والأوضاع الاجتماعية والسياسية التي ارتبطت بنشأة المسرح وسيره في إيران، من جهة أخرى.
وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن الفضل الأساسي في مصادر هذا الكتاب يعود للكاتبين الكبيرين الإيرانييين، "جمشيد ملك بور" الذي كتب "أدبيات نمايشي در إيران" (الأدب المسرحي في إيران) في ثلاثة مجلدات، و"بهرام بيضايي" الذي ألف "نمايش در إيران" (المسرح في إيران)، إذ في تقييم هذين الكتابين يكفي أن نشير إلى أنهما كانا نتائج محاولات جدية عن المسرح الإيراني القديم والحديث.
