في روايته "حبٌ في قندهار" يسلط الروائي السعودي الضوء على مفهوم الجهاد في الإسلام، والفتاوى العبثية التي تقضي بمحاربة الغرب وأميركا ونصرة المسلمين في أي أرض كانوا. إذ ترصد الرواية رحلة ثلاثة شبان إلى أرض الجهاد في أفغانستان بعد أن أدرك الشيخ حاجتهم إلى طريق توصلهم "إلى دار باقيةٍ وتخلصنا من عفن الدنيا والحياة الغائية" مذكراً إياهم بآيات الجهاد في سبيل الله والثواب المنتظر في الآخرة.
وعليه، يمكن اعتبار هذا النص، كتاباً إستثنائياً ضمن رصيد محكيات الجهاد داخل دائرة المتخيل الجماعي ومحكياته وليس المتخيل الفردي، ومرد ذلك إلى قدرته المبهرة على المزاوجة بين العمق التمثيلي في استبطان عوالم الذات وتصوراتها عن الحياة الآخرة، وبين العالم الواقعي الذي تعيشه، وربما هو ناجم عن ارتباط الإنسان العربي والمسلم بمفهوم الفناء والمقاومة والصبر وترويض النفس على الصلابة والنهوض. والغاية النهائية الحلم بإقامة خلافة إسلامية على الأرض.
وهكذا وبعد رحلة شاقة من بلد إلى آخر، ومن جبهة قتال إلى أخرى، وخوف وصراع وتردد يكتشف الشبان المجاهدون أنهم ليسوا سوى صفقة رابحة لمن ذهبوا يصارعون الموت من أجلهم . " ... ونحن نتجه إلى مصير مجهول .. أخبرنا سائق الشاحنة، الباكستانية .. والتي تنوي تسليمهم إلى الأميركان قريباً".
"كثيراً ما كنت أتساءلُ بحرقةٍ وألمٍ: "لِمَنْ تركت أهلي وأحبابي... وذكرياتي الجميلة وأصدقاء الطّفولة؟"... وكنت أقول: "هل يستحقّ أهلي تلك الغصّة الّتي تركتها لهم؟"... "وهل يستحقّون تلك الحرقة الّتي زرعتها في قلوبهم؟"...
خصوصاً، والدتي الحبيبة... الّتي وصلت الأخبار عنها في رسالةٍ قصيرة: "أمّكَ في العناية المركّزة أصيبَتْ بإنهيارٍ عصبيٍّ... وربّما بجلةٍ في الدّماغ".
