للفيلسوف المسلم تركي الأصل: أبو نصر محمد الفارابي، والذي لُقِّب ﺑ «المعلم الثاني»، وهو أوّل من بلور مفهومًا متكاملًا للمدينة الفاضلة من منظورٍ عربيٍّ إسلامي، التي تعكس وجهًا من أحلام الحكماء والفلاسفة منذ عصر الفيلسوف «أفلاطون» مرورًا بـ «توماس مور»، فالعصر الحديث.
جاء الكتاب في فصولٍ عددها سبعةٍ وثلاثين، دارت في خمس محاور رئيسيّة، جمع فيها بين أشكالٍ مُتنوّعة من العلوم مثل: المنطق والسّياسة والأخلاق، وتناول الذّات الإلهيّة بدايةً كونها الموجودَ الأوّل، ثمّ تطرّق إلى العالَم، بكلّ ما فيه من كائنات حيّة، وموجودات، وجمادات، وأجرام سماويّة.
تضمّ ن الكتاب حديثًا متعمّقًا في النّفس الإنسانية، وأخلاقها وفطرتها الأزليّة، كما كانت حاجة الإنسان إلى الاجتماع من ضمن ضرورات ناقشها الكتاب في فصله الأخير.
صاغ الفارابي صورةً مثاليّةً للتعاون بين الأفراد داخل أُطر المجتمع، سعيًا نحو الفضيلة، والارتقاء إلى مدينةٍ فاضلةٍ يعمُّها العدل والوئام، أخلاقُ أفرادها وفضيلتهم هي ما تمكّنهم من الصمود في مواجهة المدن الجاهلة.
