فى رحاب الخلافة العباسية ازدهرت العلوم والمعارف والآداب, وكان للعلماء فى شتى المجالات شأن كبير وحظوة لدى الخلفاء, وكان العالم يجيد أكثر من فن وعلم, ويكون فى كل واحد منها خبيراً حاذقاً, كما نجد يوحنا بن ماسويه ذلك الذى ورث الطب من أبيه وجده, فكان طبيباً خاصاً ومقرباً لعدد من الخلفاء المتتاليين, وكان كذلك عالماً وخبيراً فى الأحجار الكريمة فوضع أول كتاب فى العربية عنها يتناول فى رحاب الخلافة العباسية ازدهرت العلوم والمعارف والآداب, وكان للعلماء فى شتى المجالات شأن كبير وحظوة لدى الخلفاء, وكان العالم يجيد أكثر من فن وعلم, ويكون فى كل واحد منها خبيراً حاذقاً, كما نجد يوحنا بن ماسويه ذلك الذى ورث الطب من أبيه وجده, فكان طبيباً خاصاً ومقرباً لعدد من الخلفاء المتتاليين, وكان كذلك عالماً وخبيراً فى الأحجار الكريمة فوضع أول كتاب فى العربية عنها يتناول علم المعادن وليس فى فوائدها الطبية, وأيضاً وضع الكتب الأدبية التى تحوى النوادر والطرائف...هذا هو العالم الذى نتعرف على قصة حياته بطريقة مبسطة ورشيقة فى هذا الكتاب الذى وضع كلماته "سليمان فياض" ورسومه " إسماعيل دياب", وهى تناسب الناشئة والأولاد, فتمنحهم فرصة ممتعة للتعرف على علماء العرب.
