فأعلم أن من أعظم القرب إلى الله تعالى وأجل المفاخر فى الدنيا والآخرة عمارة المساجد، ومن أخصها وأجلها وأعظمها المسجد الحرام الذى فيه بيت الله تعالى فقد جعله سبحانه وتعالى بمثابة للناس وأمنا كما دل على ذلك الكتاب العزيز والسنة الصحيحة النبوية.
وجرت فيه جملة عمارات ومرمات عديدة على أقسام متعددة، فى عصور مختلفة، وأشكال متباينة، علاوة على الزيادات المذكورة ذكرها بعض المفسرين، وشرح الحديث، ومنصفى مناسك الحج، وعموم مؤرخى مكة المكرمة، وبعض الفقهاء فى متون كتب الفقة وشروحها وحواشيها، وفى بعض المعاجم، وقواميس اللغة، وغير ذلك، وقد دون كل واحد منهم قسماً من تلك المعاير التى جرى بعضها قبل عصره، شاهدها بنفسة أو بلغته عن ذى ثقه.
وقد استعنت الله تعالى وجمعت كل ما ذكره أولئك الأعلام من الأخبار التى تتعلق بعمارة المسجد الحرام وما احتوى عليه من مقام إبراهيم، وبئر زمزم، والمنبر، والمقامات الأربعة وغير ذلك بحسب تواريخها قرناً.
بعد قرن وجيلاً بعد جيل، وعصراً بعد عصر، وأوصلتها ببعضها وجعلتها متسلسلة من ابتداء وتوسعة أمير المؤمنين عمر بن الخطاب رضى الله عنه إلى العصر الحاضر الذى دونت فيه هذا المنصف وهو عام الأربعة والخمسن والثلاثمائة والألف من الهجرة، وقد أضفت إلى ذلك عموماً ما رأيته ووقفت عليه وعلمته مما جرى بالمسجد الحرام ومحتوياته من عمارات وإصلاحات ومرمات منذ أربعين سنة أى من ابتداء عمارة السلطان عبد الحميد خان بن السلطان عبد المجيد خان العثمانى التى جرت بالمسجد الحرام سنة 1314 هجرية إلى هذا التاريخ سنة 1354 هـ، كى يتم للقارئ الوقوف على كل ذلك مفصلاً بسهولة، وعلى ما بذلة الخلفاء الراشدين، وأمراء المؤمنين، وملوك المسلمين، وسلاطين الإسلام، من عرب وعجم من الأموال الطائلة العظيمة، والهمهم العالية الجسمية، فى تشييد بناء المسجد الحرام، وتوسيعه، وإصلاح كل ما خرب فيه إلى أن بلغ هذا الحد من السعة، هذه الضخامة من البناء الذى هو عليه اليوم.
