يضم هذا المجلد الرابع من سلسلة "تراث طه حسين" مجموعة المقالات السياسية التى فاض بها قلم عميد الأدب العربى عام 1934، وهو العام الذى بلغت عنده أزمة النظام السياسى المصرى -الذى وضعت أركانه بعد صدور تصريح 28 فبراير 1922- ذروتها، حيث بلغ الصراع بين الملك فؤاد الأول المتعطش إلى الإستبداد بالسلطة، والحركة الوطنية بزعامة "الوفد" المدافعة عن حقوق الأمة، درجة عالية من الإحتدام، جعلت يضم هذا المجلد الرابع من سلسلة "تراث طه حسين" مجموعة المقالات السياسية التى فاض بها قلم عميد الأدب العربى عام 1934، وهو العام الذى بلغت عنده أزمة النظام السياسى المصرى -الذى وضعت أركانه بعد صدور تصريح 28 فبراير 1922- ذروتها، حيث بلغ الصراع بين الملك فؤاد الأول المتعطش إلى الإستبداد بالسلطة، والحركة الوطنية بزعامة "الوفد" المدافعة عن حقوق الأمة، درجة عالية من الإحتدام، جعلت الإنجليز يعدلون عن مساندة القصر وينزلون على إرادة "الجبهة الوطنية" التى طالبت بإعادة العمل بالدستور الصادر فى 1923، وخاصة أن سحب الأزمات الدولية بدأت تتجمع فى الأفق منذرة بحرب عالمية جديدة، لا تستطيع بريطانيا أن تخوضها دون أن تضمن إستقرار الأوضاع فى مصر.
وقد عبر طه حسين عن معارضته للإنقلاب الدستورى فى هذه المجموعة من المقالات التى تنقسم إلى قسمين: "حديث المساء" وهو العنوان الذى إختاره عميد الأدب العربى للمقالات التى كان ينشرها فى صحيفة "كوكب الشرق" المسائية الوفدية بإنتظام من مارس 1933 إلى إبريل 1934، والقسم الآخر يضم مقالاته التى كان ينشرها على صفحات جريدة "الوادى" اليومية وإختار لها عنوان "حديث الوادى"، وقد نشر فيها مقالين فى يتاير وفبراير 1934 ثم أصبح يكتب بإنتظام فى الفترة من يونيو حتى ديسمبر 1934، ويضم "حديث المساء" 72 مقالا طويلاً نسبياً، بينما يضم "حديث الوادى" 123 مقالاً قصيراً.
ويبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة للدكتور رءوف عباس يساعد فيها القارئ فى الوقوف على جذور أزمة النظام السياسى المصرى حتى يستمتع بصحبة طه حسين فى الحديثين ويعيش معه الجو السياسى الذى حفزه على الكتابة.
