تحت عنوان "اللغة الثانية في إشكالية المنهج والنظرية والمصطلح في الخطاب النقدي العربي الحديث" يجمع فاضل ثامر مقاربات (نقدية – أدبية) لأكثر من ناقد غربي وعربي يستنطق من خلال كتاباتهم النقدية (اللغة الثانية) وتعني (لغة النقد) التي هي خطاباً على خطاب وإبداعاً من طراز خاص.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن جوهر الإشكالية التي يواجهها النقد العربي الحديث – تقف في مقدمتها إشكالية البحث عن منهج نقدي أو مناهج نقدية قادرة على استنطاق الخطاب الأدبي وقراءته بطريقة خلاّقة. فقد ظلت مسألة المنهج في النقد، أو النقد المنهجي، غير واضحة، وغير مستقرة في الممارسة النقدية لمعظم النقاد العرب منذ مطلع هذا القرن،وحتى وقتنا هذا، وكثيراً ما لمسنا إضطراباً في تحديد مفهوم المنهج ووظيفته وآليته، بل كنا نلحظ في أحيان أخرى غياباً كاملاً للمنظور المنهجي في الخطاب النقدي، إلا أننا من جانب آخر لم نعدم ظهور بعض ملامح النقد المنهجي في تجارب عدد من النقاد العرب، إلا أنها ملامح لم تتكامل أو تتضح بصورة متوازنة. ويبدو أن الإنفجار النقدي الراهن في مضمار النظرية الأدبية قد وضع إشكالية المنهج في الصدارة باعتبارها مهمة راهنة وملحّة تتطلب المعالجة والحسم.
يقسم الكتاب إلى اربعة فصول تضمنت دراسات نقدية للمؤلف وتجارب نقدية خاصة لآخرين جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: الفصل الأول: في سيميائية النص الأدبي. الفصل الثاني: النقد العربي وإشكالية النظرية الأدبية الحديثة. الفصل الثالث: مشروع حوار مع الفكر البنيوي. والفصل الرابع: إشكالية المصطلح والمنهج.
