كأنه قفزة فى عالم المجهول، حيث يعود «جورجيو» الى بلدته فى الريف، ويرمم منزل عائلته القديمة، ويقرر بدء حياة جديدة تتناول الرواية فى أسلوب نثرى رشيق، لا يخلو من الخيالات الشعرية، حياة «جيورجيو» وهو رجل فى منتصف العمر بلغ قمة السلم الوظيفى فى إحدى الوظائف الهامة خارج ايطاليا، إلا أنه يقرر فجأة التخلى عن نجاحه وحياته الوظيفية والعودة الى بلدته فى الريف الايطالى، وبدا هذا القرار
كأنه قفزة فى عالم المجهول، حيث يعود «جورجيو» الى بلدته فى الريف، ويرمم منزل عائلته القديمة، ويقرر بدء حياة جديدة بسيطة ،وخلال اقامته فى بيته الريفى تتداعى الى ذهنه ذكريات طفولته وشبابه الأول مع الأشخاص والأشياء والمشاعر بكل تجلياتها وغموضها ويجد «جورجيو» فى عزلته فرصة حقيقية للتأمل وإعادة تقييم حياته وربط ما تقطع بين ماضيه وحاضره.
تقدم الرواية صورة حية للمجتمع الايطالى الريفى فى مرحلة الانتقال الى الحياة الصناعية، وتطور المفاهيم الاجتماعية من خلال معاناة البطل مع أزمة منتصف العمر وحلم البحث عن السعادة المفقودة.
