مهدی اخوان ثالث در سال ۱۳۰۷ در مشهد چشم به جهان گشود. در مشهد تا متوسطه نیز ادامه تحصیل داد واز نوجوانی به شاعری روی آورد و در آغاز قالب شعر کهن را برگزید. در سال ۱۳۲۶ دوره هنرستان مشهد رشته آهنگری را به پایان بر و همان جا در همین رشته آغاز به کار کرد.در آغاز دههٔ بیست زندگیش به تهران آمد و پیشهٔ آموزگاری را برگزید. در سال ۱۳۲۹ بادختر عمویش ایران اخوان ثالث ازدواج کرد. با اینکه نخست به سیاست گرایش مهدی اخوان ثالث در سال ۱۳۰۷ در مشهد چشم به جهان گشود. در مشهد تا متوسطه نیز ادامه تحصیل داد واز نوجوانی به شاعری روی آورد و در آغاز قالب شعر کهن را برگزید. در سال ۱۳۲۶ دوره هنرستان مشهد رشته آهنگری را به پایان بر و همان جا در همین رشته آغاز به کار کرد.در آغاز دههٔ بیست زندگیش به تهران آمد و پیشهٔ آموزگاری را برگزید. در سال ۱۳۲۹ بادختر عمویش ایران اخوان ثالث ازدواج کرد. با اینکه نخست به سیاست گرایش داشت ولی پس از رویداد ۲۸ مرداد از سیاست تا مدتی روی گرداند. چندی بعد با نیما یوشیج و شیوهٔ سرایندگی او آشنا شد. شاهکار اخوان ثالث شعر زمستان است. او رویکردی میهنپرستانه داشت و بهترین اشعارش را نیز برای ایران گفتهاست (تو را ای کهن بوم و بر دوست دارم). او دارای ۴ فرزند است
پیشینه و رویدادها
* اخوان چند بار به زندان افتاد و یک بار نیز به حومه کاشان تبعید شد
* در سال ۱۳۳۳ و ۲۹ چندین بار به اتهامات سیاسی زندانی شد
* در سال ۱۳۳۶ پس از آزادی از زندان در رادیو، و مدتی در تلوزیون خوزستان منتقل شد
* در سال ۱۳۵۳ به تهران منتقل شد و در رادیو تلوزیون ملی شروع به کار کرد
* در سال ۱۳۵۶ به تدریس شعر سامانی و معاصر در دانشگاه تهران پرداخت
* در سال ۱۳۶۰ بدون حقوق و با محرومیت از تمام مشاغل دولتی بازنشسته شد
* در سال ۱۳۶۹ به دعوت خانه فرهنگ آلمان برای برگزاری شب شعری از تاریخ ۴ تا ۷ آوریل برای نخستین بار به خارج رفت
چند ماه پس از بازگشت از خانه فرهنگ آلمان در سال ۱۳۶۹ در چهارم شهریور ماه جان سپرد. وی در توس در کنار آرامگاه فردوسی به خاک سپرده شد
