وتتيح المعارضة الأخلاقية فهمًا أعمق للعلاقة بين الفرد والدولة، ففي حين أن الحرب عرفت دومًا من يفرون من الخدمة العسكرية ومن يخونون أوطانهم، فإن المعارض الأخلاقي ظهر أول مرة في عصر الدولة القومية مع دخول شعوب برمتها في ”حروب شاملة" فيما بينها، والمجند الفرد في الجيش الوطني عالق في حركة دائرية و متضاربة من الحقوق والمسئوليات؛ فعليه مسئولية حمل السلاح من أجل وطنه، إلا أن هذه المسئولية في حد ذاتها قد تمثل حقًا؛ إذ إنها وحدها التي تمنح المواطن حق المواطنة.
