كان حى عابدين فى الجيل الماضى من أهم أحياء القاهرة بسبب وجود قصر عابدين والملك فيه، وكانت تسكنه طبقة الباشوات وغيرهم ممكن يعملون فى القصر موظفين أوخدماً أوصناعاً وحرفيين. كما كان يجمع أجناساً من البشر من جنسيات مختلفة، وكنت تسمع دائماً لغات مختلفة يتحدث بها هؤلاء البشر ما عدا اللغة الإنجليزية لأن الإنجليز لا يكن فى استطاعتهم الحيلة داخل حى كهذا، هم يحتلون مصر وبينهم وبين شعبها عداء متأصل بسبب الاختلال. وكنت أسمع فى شارعنا أحاديث باليونانية والإيطالية والفرنسية والأرمنية فى عرض الطريق أو من النوافذ والشرفات بين أبناء هذه الطوائف رجالاً ونساء. كما كنت أسمع لهجة أهل النوبة أيضاً. وبعد هذه السنين الطويلة لم نفارق هذه الصور وما زالت شخوصها مائلة فى خيالى، ولكن بعض هذه الشخصيات المجهولة تأسر فى وتعود بى إلى ذكريات قديمة كنت أحب أن أسجلها على الورق ولكن شواغل الحياة أوالكسل حالت دون ذلك ولكنها أصبحت تلح على وكأنها تطاردنى وتدعونى إلى تصويرها، كما طالبنى كثيرون من أصدقائى أو أبنائى أو أقاربى بالكتابة عن هذه الذكريات التى تصور جانبها من المجتمع القاهرى فى جيل مضى وقد تعرف الناس عنه الأشياء الكبيرة ولكنهم لا يعرفون الأشياء الصغيرة. وهذه الصفحات تصوير لأشياء صغيرة أصحابها شخصيات مجهولة.. ولكنهم كلهم بشر.
