همۀ ویژگی های شخصیت جذاب و وقایع زندگی پر شور و سودای کافکا در یادداشت های روزانه ای که از او بر جای مانده بازتاب یافته است. او در این یادداشت ها که بخش اصلی زندگی اش، از ۱۹۱۰ تا ۱۹۲۳، را در بر میگیرد، بسیاری از اندیشه های ادبی، قطعات کوتاه نمایشی، رؤیاها و کابوس ها، آغاز یا بخش هایی از داستان ها و رمان هایش را آورده و حوادث کوچک و بزرگ زندگی اش را، با طنزی سبکبارانه، گاه همۀ ویژگی های شخصیت جذاب و وقایع زندگی پر شور و سودای کافکا در یادداشت های روزانه ای که از او بر جای مانده بازتاب یافته است. او در این یادداشت ها که بخش اصلی زندگی اش، از ۱۹۱۰ تا ۱۹۲۳، را در بر میگیرد، بسیاری از اندیشه های ادبی، قطعات کوتاه نمایشی، رؤیاها و کابوس ها، آغاز یا بخش هایی از داستان ها و رمان هایش را آورده و حوادث کوچک و بزرگ زندگی اش را، با طنزی سبکبارانه، گاه با شرحی دقیق و تکان دهنده، به ثبت رسانده است. آن چه بیش از هر چیز در این یادداشت ها به چشم می خورد حساسیت عمیق او در مشاهدۀ زندگی و شرح شگفت انگیز لحظه های زودگذری است که جز برای نویسنده ای توانمند دست نیافتنی می نماید. خود او در یکی از یادداشت هایش گفته است: «آن چه نوشته نشده است جلوی چشم های آدم جولان می دهد» و این یادداشت ها نشان می دهد که او هر آن چه را که جلوی چشمش می آمد یا از سرش می گذشت با چه ظرافت و پشتکار کم نظیری روی کاغذ آورده است.
