لا نشك اليوم أن البحث حول تاريخ إفريقيا الغربية جنوب الصحراء تخطى مرحلة التنقيب عن الهوية، وإعادة بناء الذاكرة الجماعية التي أثارت جدلا طويلا بين دارسي النصف الأول من القرن الماضي، هذه الذاكرة التي استلزم تجميع عناصرها المتناثرة والتمييز فيها بين المتخيل والواقع وقتا مديدا، لينطلق – ومنذ بضعة عقود – زمن باحثين جدد من أبناء المجال المدروس، أو من خارج حدوده يشدهم الطموح إلى لا نشك اليوم أن البحث حول تاريخ إفريقيا الغربية جنوب الصحراء تخطى مرحلة التنقيب عن الهوية، وإعادة بناء الذاكرة الجماعية التي أثارت جدلا طويلا بين دارسي النصف الأول من القرن الماضي، هذه الذاكرة التي استلزم تجميع عناصرها المتناثرة والتمييز فيها بين المتخيل والواقع وقتا مديدا، لينطلق – ومنذ بضعة عقود – زمن باحثين جدد من أبناء المجال المدروس، أو من خارج حدوده يشدهم الطموح إلى تقييم هذا الماضي استجلاء لإسهاماته في الحركة التاريخية الكونية. ومن حسن حظ الزمن المدروس أن الإسطوغرافيا العربية والأوروبية والسودانية، علاوة على البحوث الأثرية والإبيغرافيا والإثنوغرافيا وغيرها، لم تنتشل إفريقيا ما وراء الصحراء من المجهول فحسب، وإنما نفت عنها الاتهامات التي كرست – زمن ما قبل الاستقلال – نظرية الأرض العقيمة حضاريا. فانطلاقا من الطموح ذاته، وبدافع الرغبة في فهم حاضر بلدان إفريقيا الغربية، عمدتا – استنادا إلى الحقول المعرفية نفسها – إلى سبر البنيات المؤسسة لإمبراطوريات السودان الغربي الوسيطية وتقصي – على اتساع مجالاتها وتنوع ثقافتها – خصوصيتها الحضارية، ثم تحري طبيعة علاقاتها بجيرانها، خصوصا الشماليين منهم، حيث يسترعي الانتباه دور الفقيه والتاجر الصنهاجي والزناتي في الربط بين ضفتي الصحراء في ود وسلام.
