على الرغم من أن وراء هذه المبادرة لترجمة "كتاب وصف مصر"- ككل مبادرة فردية- دوافعها وأسبابها وظروفها الخاصة، إلا أنها ينبغي أن توضع ضمن إطار أوسع وأشمل من تلك الدوافع والأسباب الخاصة لتربط بذلك الاهتمام الكبير الذي بدأ المفكرون المصريون يولونه لتاريخهم الحديث والمعاصر بعد صدمة يونية 1967.
فمنذ تلك الصدمة الهائلة، بدأت الكتب- مؤلفة ومترجمة- تصدر تباعًا تتحدث عن تاريخ مصر ودور مصر.. وهكذا لم يعد التاريخ- وتاريخ مصر بالذات- مجرد دراسات أكاديمية لا يتولاها إلا المختصون، وإنما أصبح ثقافة أصيلة لكل مثقف وطني تشغله أمور بلاده.
ومنذ ذلك الوقت بدأ بتشكيل ذلك الإطار الثقافي الواسع الذي أشير إليه. ويسعدني أن أضع اليوم في داخل هذا الإطار كتابنا هذا الذي يشكل دراسة كاملة من ذلك السفر الضخم، الذي لا يفوق شهرته إلا طول إهمالنا له: كتاب "وصف مصر" أو مجموعة الملاحظات والأبحاث التي أجريت في مصر أثناء حملة الجيش الفرنسي، وهذا هو عنوان ذلك السفر الضخم كاملًا.
وتشتمل هذه المجلدات على دراسات عن مختلف نواحي الحياة في مصر كما شاهدها علماء الحملة ومهندسوها. وبعض هذه الدراسات طويلة، بحيث يمكن نشرها مستقلة في كتاب، شأن الدراسة التي ننشرها اليوم، وبعضها متوسط الطول، وبعضها مجرد ملاحظات لا تستغرق أربع أو خمس صفحات.
وسوف يلاحظ القارئ أنني قد آثرت عدم التدخل إلا في أضيق نطاق ممكن لاعتبارات عديدة أهمها: أننا هنا بصدد أثر علمي هام ينبغي أن يحظى بالاحترام، أنه ليس كل ما يقال عنا صحيحًا على إطلاقه، وإن كان ينبغي علينا في كل الأحوال ألا نخشى أية فكرة صحيحة، أنه قد آن الأوان لنواجه بشجاعة ما يقال عنا، فنتجاهل ذلك أو الصمت عنه ليس هو الوسيلة المثلى، فذلك الموقف لن يعني إلا تسليمنا ولو بشكل سالب بصحته، ومعرفة ما يقال عنا هي أفضل وسيلة لمواجهته بل ودحضه.
وفي النهاية أستميح القارئ عذرًا إن وجد بالعمل بعض الثغرات وأنه لواجدها- وليكن حسبي من هذا العمل أن أنجو فقط من اللوم وأن أكون قد قدمت على قدر طاقتي خدمة لوطني، مصر، ولمواطني المصريين.
