يعتبر هذا الكتاب من الكتب الفريدة، ذات الشهرة العظيمة، حوى أشعاراً ودرراً عكف عليها الأدباء والشعراء واللغويون قراءة وتمحيصاً ودراسة وتدريساً.
وهو ديوان شعر التزم فيه ناظمُه ما لايلزم الشاعرَ عادةً؛ لذلك سَمّاه مؤلِّفه: (لزم ما لا يلزم)، ويقال له أيضاً: (اللزوميات).
ولزوم ما لا يلزم: فنّ في علم القوافي يتلَخّصُ بـ: أن يُلزِمَ الشاعرُ أو السّاجع نفسَه حروفاً قبل الحرف الأخير (الرّوِي)، أو حركات مما هو ليس بلازم في الشعر، ولا تقتضيه قواعد علم القافية؛ كأنْ يكون الحرفان أو الثلاثة الأخيرة متماثلة في كلِّ القوافي، وذلك مع الحفاظ على أن تكون الألفاظ تابعةً للمعاني. صدّر المؤلِّف كتابه بمقدمة مهمة في علم القوافي، ورتبه على حروف المعجم.
أما مؤلِّفُه فهو: أبو العلاء أحمدُ بنُ عبدِ الله بنِ سُلَيمانَ التّنُوخي المَعَرِّيّ (363-449ﻫ) شاعرٌ فيلسُوف، وُلِدَ وتُوفِّيَ بمَعرّة النّعمان شمالي الشام، كان نحيل الجِسْم، أُصِيبَ بالجُدَرِي في الرابعة من عمره ففَقَدَ بصرَه، نَظَمَ الشِّعرَ وهو ابنُ إحدَى عشْرةَ سنة، وتأثر مطلعَ حياته بشعر المتنبي، فنظم ديوان (سِقْطُ الزَنْدِ) على نهج شعر المتنبي. وكان مُتَضَلِّعاً في فُنُون الأدب، وكان يُملِي على بضع عشرة محبرة في فنون من العلوم، وسَمّى نفسَه: رَهِين المَحْبِسَيْن، لذهاب بصره بالجدري، ولزومه منزله.
