Le roman suit pas à pas la lutte acharnée qu'ils vont devoir mener, chacun à leur manière, pour assurer leur survie et celle de leurs proches dans un monde hostile, et qui plus est, en pleine mutation. De l'époque du Mandat français à 1975, quand éclate la guerre civile, Hoda Barakat restitue près de soixante-dix ans d'histoire locale, multipliant les angles d'approche, reproduisant les incantations religieuses, les chants guerriers et le franc-parler des habitants, scrutant à travers les destins croisés de ses personnages les métamorphoses du lieu sous l'effet d'une "modernité" à la fois désirée et redoutée. L'émigration bouleverse les structures familiales traditionnelles, le tourisme modifie le paysage de fond en comble, introduit de nouveaux modes de vie et de nouvelles valeurs... Reste pourtant, ici comme ailleurs, le souvenir lancinant d'une solitude que rien, ni dans la guerre ni dans la paix, ne semble pouvoir dissiper.
