إن أول معالجة مركزة ودقيقة لتاريخ القرامطة تمت على يد مستشرق هولندي هو "دي خويه" عندما نشر في العام 1862 "رسالة عن قرامطة البحرين".. ثم طورها بعد ذلك إلى كتاب شامل. وقد أستند في بحثه إلى مصادر تاريخية مخطوطة في معظمها، وتطلب منه ذلك جهداً شاقاً لا تقلل منه معرفة صاحبه الوثيقة باللغة العربية وألفته الطويلة بجزء كبير من مخطوطاتها التاريخية.
وقد قام المترجم بعملية تحقيق ليصدر الكتاب بدقة تتناسب مع المصادر التي أصبحت مطبوعة الآن.
وغني عن البيان إن هذا الكتاب يعتبر المرجع الأول لكل دراسة تاريخية عن القرامطة، ونضعه أمام القارئ العربي كشفاً لجزء مغمور ومتجاهل من تاريخ الحركات الاجتماعية والفكرية والسياسية في تراثنا.
