الطبري، أبو جعفر (224-310هـ ، 839 - 923م).
أبو جعفر محمد بن جرير بن يزيد بن غالب. إمام المفسرين. ولد بطبرستان، وبدأ في طلب العلم في السادسة عشرة من عمره، ثم رحل إلى بغداد واستقر فيها، بعد أن زار عدة بلدان.
أثنى العلماء على الطبري كثيرًا، فقالوا: إنه ثقة عالم، أحد أئمة أهل السنة الكبار، يؤخذ بأقواله، ويُرجع إليه لسعة علمه، وسلامة منهجه. ترك عدة مؤلفات نافعة أبرزها تفسيره الكبير جامع البيان عن تأويل آي القرآن المشهور بين الجمهور بتفسير الطبري. وهو أول تفسير كامل وصل إلينا، أفاد منه كل من جاء بعده، ولهذا عدّ العلماء الطبري أبا التفسير، كما عدوه أبا التاريخ؛ لأن له كتابًا كبيرًا في التاريخ لم يؤلَّف مثله، إلا أنه لم يلتزم فيه بالتوثيق. وسماه تاريخ الأمم والملوك، وله أيضًا: تهذيب الآثار وغير ذلك.
توفي الطبري في بغداد.
