Publié une première fois au Maroc en 1990, introuvable à ce jour, L’Hôpital est un livre essentiel de la littérature marocaine. À l’instar du Passé simple de Driss Chraïbi, de Nedjma de Kateb Yacine, de L’institut Benjamenta de Robert Walser ou des récits de Kafka, il est de ces textes rares qui à la fois affirment leur autonomie absolue et expriment en profondeur la société de leur temps. Fable universelle sur l’enfermement et la résistance, il est aussi bien une métaphore des conditions de production des artistes et de l’art dans le Maroc de la deuxième moitié du xxe siècle.
