إن فلسفة فوكو، هي فلسفة الاهتمام باليومي من خلال الحفر في ثنايا الواقع بكل تلبساته وهامشياته والولوج إلى صميمه ومحاولة تفكيكه بما هو تفكيك. "موضعي خالص"، بمعنى أ،ه لا يعني بتفكيك جزء من الكل الذي يشمل الواقعة الاجتماعية في لحظة تاريخية معينة، بل هو تفكيك موضعي خالص للفضاء الاجتماعي.

تستمد قيمة أعمال هذا الفيلسوف وطرافتها من قيمة هذا التفكيك والحفر في خبايا المسكوت عنه. إذ نجده قد أوكل لذاته مهمة البحث والتنقيب في جوانبة الأحداث قصد تعقبها لمحاولة افتكاك والظفر بإجابة عن سؤال ضمني يطرحه كل إنسان على نفسه من حين إلى آخر انسجاماً مع تقاليد الفكر الفلسفي الذي يريد أن يفهم "الما يحدث" باعتبار أن الفهم جزء عضوي وحقيقي من هذا "الما يحدث نفسه".
لعل جهد فوكو الأركيولوجي ليس إلآ محاولة لقراءة لحظات حاسمة من تاريخ الفكر الغربي بإظهار الخلفيات المعرفية والاجتماعية والسياسية والأخلاقية التي تحكم العلاقة بين الفرد والمجتمع، إذ كيف يمكن للفرد أن يتعرف على ذاته في خضم تطور الدولة الحديثة والإدارة السياسية لحياة الأفراد في المجتمع؟ إن الواقع الذي نعيش فيه يفرض علينا أن نثير مسألة العلاقة التي تحكم واقع الفرد في المجتمعات الحديثة والمعاصرة، هذا الواقع الذي أصبحت فيه الذات الفردية "إما مقنعة داخل ذاتها وإما مقنعة من الآخرين".
