عرف عن أمير المؤمنين علي بن أبي طالب (رضي الله عنه) الحكمة والبلاغة والموعظة الحسنة لعموم المسلمين، وفي هذا الكتاب يجمع القاضي عبد الواحد محمد التميمي الآمدي (11316) حكمة للإمام، مرتباً إياها على حروف المعجم بحسب الترتيب الألفبائي وبالإستناد إلى كتاب (غرر الحكم ودرر الكلم) للإمام علي بن أبي طالب وأخرجها في حلة جديدة تختلف عن سابقاتها مثل نسخة ونسخة بيروت، ونسخة النجف فجاءت هذه النسخة بمثابة خلاصة لتلك النسخ.
أيضاً عمد الآمدي إلى تصحيح النص الأصلي وإعادة ترتيب الأقوال والحكم على أساس التسلسل الألفبائي حتى ضمن الحرف الواحد، شارحاً الكلمات المبهجة مما يحتاج منها إلى الشرح والتفسير بالإعتماد على كتب وقواميس اللغة، وشروحات نهج البلاغة، فأصبح الكتاب بمثابة معجم يحفل بأجمل ما تفوه به أمير المؤمنين من درر الكلم.
من حكم الأمام علي (رضي الله عنه) نقرأ: -لا يستقيم الحوائج إلا بثلاث: بتصفيرها لتعظم، وسترها لتظهر، وتعجيلها لتهنأ. –أوفر الناس حظاً من الآخرة أقلهم حظاً في الدنيا. –سبب فساد الدين الهوى.
