هذا الكتاب يعالج برؤية إسلامية صافية، العديد من الموضوعات والمفردات التي تمس النشأة والتطور حيناً، وتتحدث عن "المنهج" حيناً آخر، وتمضي لكي تدلي بدلوها في "فلسفة التاريخ" حيناً ثالثاً.
وبنظرة على محتويات الكتاب: بعناوينه الرئيسية وموضوعاته الفرعية، يمكن المرء أن يتبين المساحة الواسعة التي اجتازها المؤلف عبر هذه المحاور الثلاثة، محاولاً بقدر كبير من الإخلاص للحق، أن يقدم رؤية إسلامية لهذه المسألة أو تلك من المسائل المزدحمة المتشابكة في معمار المعرفة التاريخية المتشعب وخرائطها المعقدة الصعبة.
ولقد قام المؤلف بتغذية مؤلفه وتوثيقه بحشد غير قليل من النصوص والاستشهادات، سواء من المصادر العربية القديمة، أم الدراسات والبحوث الحديثة، عربية وغير عربية، الأمر الذي يمنح الكتاب خمية علمية ويوسع آفاق التحليلات المقارنة.
مهما يكن من أمر، فإن الكتاب يغذي توجهات عديدة في دائرة أسلمة التاريخ، ويفتح آفاقاً شتى للبحث والتقنين، كما أنه يشجع الباحثين الآخرين لكي يدلوا بدلوهم في واحد أو أكثر من سياقات الفكر التاريخي: تأسيساً وتنظيراً، أو مقارنة ونقداً وتحليلاً، أو تركيباً وتطبيقاً.
بفتح آفاقاً شتى للبحث والتحليل في محاور المعرفة التاريخية، نشأة وتطوراً، وفلسفة ومنهجاً، كما يغذي توجهات التأصيل الإسلامي لعلم التاريخ، ويشجع الباحثين لكي يدلوا بدلوهم في واحد أو أكثر من سياقات الفكر التاريخي، تأسيساً وتنظيراً، أو مقارنة ونقداً وتحليلاً، أو تركيباً وتطبيقاً.
ويتعرض الكتاب للمفهوم العلمي للتاريخ، ثم للفكر التاريخي في التلراث الإسلامي وخاصة عند ابن خلدون، ثم للاتجاهات الحديثة في مجال البحث التاريخي. ويقدم في النهاية معالم منهج إسلامي لإعادة كتابة التاريخ، محاولاً بذلك الإسهام في الجهود القائمة لأسلمة المعرفة التاريخية، والتي يرعاها المعهد العالمي للفكر الإسلامي منذ أكثر من عقد من الزمان.
