وأتى اختيار الدراسات التي يجمعها هذا الكتاب على أساس ما كتبه عن شخصيات عصر الثورة نخبة من ألمع مثقفي الجيل الماضي الذين عاصروا الثورة التالية سنة 1919، وكانوا معها أو عليها، ولكن يجمعهم الانتماء إلى الجيل التالي لجيل العرابيين، ويجمعهم أثرهم الفذ في تطور الفكر السياسي والاجتماعي المصري خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين. وسيظهر للقارئ اختلاف وجهات نظر الكُتاب في تقييم بعض الأحداث أو الشخصيات وتحليلها، مما يجعل هذا الكتاب مادة ثرية لا غنى عنها للمهتم بالتاريخ عامة وبهذه الفترة الهامة في تاريخ مصر بشكل خاص
