لقد طالعتنا الصحف المصرية على صفحاتها خلال الفترات التاريخية المختلفة برسومات كاريكاتورية منها ما يكون له دور توجيهى إرشادى وأخرى تميزت بالقسوة وحدة الملامح, وفن الكاريكاتير بصفة عامة هو المعبر الحقيقى عن اتجاهات الشعوب ومرآة تعكس وجهة هذا الشعب بتفاصيله وقسماته.
والفنان المبدع هو القادر على التعبير وتصوير ما يجرى داخل مجتمعه عن طريق هذا الفن-هذه الأداة غير المحدودة فى توجيه الآخرين- من خلال النقد الهادف والبناء والإشارة إلى مشاكل ونقائص المجتمع وطرح حلول إيجابية بديلة, تعمل فى هذا الفن هى وسيلة للتعبير وتثبيت الفكرة ونقلها للآخرين من خلال خطوط تتشكل شيئا فشيئا وتتبلور لتصبح عملا فنيا.
إن فن الكاريكاتير قد استفاد من كل التطورات الحديثة وخاصة من الناحية التكنولوجية والتقنية حيث استخدمها الرسامون ببراعة كل حسب أسلوبه وفكره وثقافته وعقيدته السياسية.
إن الرسوم "الكاريكاتورية" ومدلولاتها السياسية وتلميحاتها الساخرة- ذات فكر ثورى خاص ولها دلالات تعبيرية ممتدة فى كفاحها الطويل ضد الأوضاع السياسية والاجتماعية, ونظرا لهذا الدور المتميز للكارياتير تسعى الدراسة الحالية لتناول جوانب الكاريكاتير السياسي من حيث فلسفته وخصائصه مع استعراض لنشأته المصرية القديمة وصولا لنشأة فن الكاريكاتير المصرى المعاصر وارتباطه بنشأة الصحافة.
