الكتاب ليس مجرد سيرة ذاتية أو مذكرات شخصية أو سياسية، لأن كاتبه كان داخل الأحداث نفسها واشترك في صنعها. فمنذ أن تخرج في الكلية الحربية عام 1942 وحتى مايو 1981، يكون قد قضى في خدمة القوات المسلحة ستة وثلاثين عاماً، إذا اضيفت لها فترة خدمته في المخابرات تصبح أربعين.. وربما كانت هذه أطول مدة خدمة عسكرية قضاها ضابط في القوات المسلحة المصري. تدرج أثناءها كمال حسن علي في السلك العسكري وخاض خلال تلك السنوات عدة حورب مع إسرائيل وشارك في حرب اليمن وحرب الاشتنزاف وكان من قادة حرب أكتوبر العظيمة، ثم تولى رئاسة المخابرات العامة فوزارة الدفاع.
