بالتأكيد لا تُشكل الرسائل المترجمة بين دفتيّ هذا الكتاب، كلّ متن الرسائل، التي كتبها إميل زولا في حياته، فما سوف نقرأه هنا، ليس سوى النُذر القليل، والقليل جدا، من هذه المراسلات الشاسعة، التي جمعته مع أصدقاء كتّاب، ومع قراء، ومع أفراد عائلته، وغيرهم العديد، ناهيك عن تلك التي كتبها في أمور عامة ونشرها في صحف ومجلات تلك الحقبة، وهو ما اصطلح على تسميته بــ "الرسالة المفتوحة". بالتأكيد لا تُشكل الرسائل المترجمة بين دفتيّ هذا الكتاب، كلّ متن الرسائل، التي كتبها إميل زولا في حياته، فما سوف نقرأه هنا، ليس سوى النُذر القليل، والقليل جدا، من هذه المراسلات الشاسعة، التي جمعته مع أصدقاء كتّاب، ومع قراء، ومع أفراد عائلته، وغيرهم العديد، ناهيك عن تلك التي كتبها في أمور عامة ونشرها في صحف ومجلات تلك الحقبة، وهو ما اصطلح على تسميته بــ "الرسالة المفتوحة". فمثلما نعرف، شكلّت الرسالة، عند كتّاب القرون الماضية، لا وسيلة تواصل فقط، بل شكّلت أيضا أدبا قائما بذاته، وفنّا حاول الجميع الدخول إلى عتبته. فهذا الفنّ الكتابي، قاد عديدين، تاليا، إلى كتابة حتى روايات وأقاصيص بأسلوب التراسل، وهو نوع وجد حضورا كبيرا في المجتمع الأوروبي، في العصور الماضية، ولا يزال حاضرا إلى أيامنا هذا، (ولا ينفي هذا أن ثمة أدبا عربيا روائيا، اعتمد بدوره صيغة الرسائل للكتابة).
