وقد اهتم هذا الكتاب بإبراز دور النخبة الوطنية فى تأسيس الجامعة باعتبارها مشروعا وطنيا نهضويا، ودور الجامعة فى التغير الاجتماعى ، وفى الحركة الوطنية ، وقضية استقلال الجامعة ، وأهم قضايا الحريات الأكاديمية ، مع تقديم شهادات هامة ونادرة لبعض الأساتذة الذين دفعوا ضريبة النضال من أجل جامعة حرة فصلا وتشريدا واعتقالا. ويتضمن الكتاب تسجيلا لنشأة وتطور جماعة العمل من أجل استقلال الجامعات (9 مارس)، وأهم ما صدر عنها من وثائق.
