تتناول المجلدات الثلاثة مذكرات الزعيم أحمد عرابي والمسماة "كشف الستار عن الأسرار فى النهضة المصرية المشهورة بالثورة العرابية"، والتى قام بكتابتها بنفسه أثناء مسيرته السياسية والاجتماعية وتضمنت كل ما تعرض له فى تلك الفترة من مؤامرات عارضا تقلبات الأحوال وذاكرا أسماء وأفعال كل من حاول التنصل من مسئوليته عن أمور ارتكبها.

أن عرابى عندما كتب مؤلفه لم يذكر أنه مذكرات بل ذكر أنه ألف كتابا يهتدى به الناس إلى الحقيقة. وهذا اللون الجديد من الكتابة التاريخية استخدمه العديد من رجالات الثورة لإيضاح وجهة نظرهم من الأحداث مما أفاد إلى حد كبير فى تفهم أحداث هذه الثورة، وفى تنمية الوعى القومى لدى المصريين، وإنعاش حركة التأليف التاريخى بوجه عام. وترجع أهمية هذا اللون من الكتابة التاريخية إلى أن كتابها كانوا من قادة هذه الثورة الذين شاركوا فى أحداثها، وكانوا شهودا على وقائعها، وإلى أنها احتوت على تصحيح بعض الوقائع، وذكر الكثير من الأسرار التى عرضوها من وجهة نظرهم الخاصة.
