الدكتور نديم نجدي من مواليد 1965 صريفا – جنوب لبنان، كاتب وباحث لبناني وأستاذ مادّة الفلسفة في الجامعة اللبنانية في كليتي التربية والآداب، نال الدكتوراه في الفلسفة من الجامعة اللبنانية عام 2002 – 2003 إضافة إلى تجربته في التعليم الثانوي الرسمي والخاص من العام 1994 حتى 2001، عالج العديد من الموضوعات الفلسفية والفكرية فيها الكثير من الدقة والعمق في التجربة والتحليل على ما انطوت عليه مضامين كتبه الصادرة والبعض منها قيد الطباعة ناهيك عن نشر العديد من المقالات والأبحاث في الصحف والدوريات الفكرية اللبنانية والعربية.

ينصب جهد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب على ما أدت إليه أعمال إدوارد سعيد وحسم حنفي وعبد الله المروي حيث يقدم المؤلف دراسة نقدية شاملة لما أنتجه هؤلاء الثلاثة في مرحلة محددة من تاريخ تطور وعي كل منهم. وهو يستهدف في ذلك أعمال محددة دافعوا فيها عن آرائهم الناجحة عن موجهات نظرية عامة. وهو يؤكد أن الاستشراق جاء بمثابة وجه من وجوه التراث والثقافي في الغرب ونظراً إلى كونه قد شكل حقلاً واسعاً لتجاذبات الجدل والحوار بين مثقفي عصر النهضة ما جعله القضية الأساس، فإننا إذا ما أردنا التعرف على حيثيات العلاقة بين المثقف والسلطة تصل إلى أن لا وجود لاستشراق كلي جامع لاختلافات المستشرقين.
ولكي لا يقع المؤلف فريسة العبث المعرفي -كما يقول- انكب تحليله على استنطاق مدى الاتساق بين الأقوال والأفعال عند كل واحد من المفكرين الثلاثة وكانت غايته ترمي إلى مقايسة نية الباحث أو المفكر على ما دعا إليه مكتوبة النقدي أو النقيض. وركز اهتمامه على ما بين سعيد -حنفي والعروي من اختلاف بقي في حدود الخلاف على ما يوحد منطلقات الرفض المتبادل في ما بينهم. الكتاب يجيب عن أسئلة، رغم أن الكثير من الأسئلة قد بقيت برسم إجابة.
